Fan Page: SUPER FRIENDS

This is the opening from the Super Friends as it appeared on Saturday mornings in 1980. The thing I find really interesting about this particular opening is that if I remember correctly, this was the first year they didn't even MENTION characters like Wendy & Marvin or The Wonder Twins, which had been the big selling point through the 1970's. Weird, huh? Please note that there will also be fan pages for the other 1980's versions of The Super Friends such as "Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show" and "The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians". You may remember them from the various i970's incarnations such as "Challenge Of The Super Friends" and "The Worlds Greatest Super Friends", but since this community is all about the 80's Saturday Morning Experience we'll just be focusing on the incarnations from the 1980's (which had all the 1970's episodes recycled in to them anywho).

Comment here with your favorite Super Friends memories, and then if it's your favorite don't forget to go vote for it in our Best of 1980 Poll!

Poll #3: Best of 1982

Please remember, this poll only includes those cartoons that were new or drastically changed in the year mentioned in the poll title. Occasionally it may be necessary to cary a show over to the next year if there is no more room in the poll and/or the cartoon had greater success in the the later years.

[Poll #1765890]

A few notes regarding this poll:
  • The Lone Ranger cartoon was actually a part of the Tarzan/Lone Ranger/Zorro Hour where they showed reruns of 1970's cartoons.
  • Don't let the inclusion of Scrappy-Doo deter yu from voting for the very excellent Scooby & Scrappy-Doo Puppy Hour... the other cartoons that were included under the banner of "Puppy" were excellent!
  • I had never in my entire life heard of Goldie Gold & Action Jack. I feel ashamed :(

Fan Page: DYNOMUTT THE DOG WONDER

A special nod to Dynomutt The Dog Wonder, who was the first of the 1970's Legends to fall oout of circulation in the 1980's. Although new episodes stopped production in the late 1970's, it was in the year 1980 that Dynomutt had his final run on network Saturday Morning TV as part of NBC's "Godzilla / Dynomutt Hour". It was the beginning of a huge trend; package two or more 1970's re-runs together and sell it to the kids as something that might be new but was really just re-runs.

So here's to you, Dynomutt... thanks for being a part of our 80's Saturday Morning Experience!

Leave your Dynomutt comments, stories and memories here to share with the rest of the group, and if Dynomutt is one of your favorites then don't forget to go vote for him in our Best of 1980 Poll!

Fan Page: GODZILLA

Another hold out from the 1970's that continually got repackaged along with other cartoons. I think this particular old-timer is notable mainly because of GODZOOKI. Godzooki was like Scrappy-Doo 1.0, a prototype which spawned a very specific type of annoying character that everyone hated.

Still though, if you're a fan feel free to leave your comments, stories, remembrances and other whatnot here in the comments to share with others. And if it was a favorite of yours, don't forget to go and vote for it in our Best Cartoon of 1980 Poll!

Scrappy-DON'T Nominations

Please comment with your nominations for most hated supporting character in a 1980's cartoon series, aka a "Scrappy-DON'T" (named for the most hated of all animated supporting characters, Scrappy-Doo).

So far the short list includes Scrappy-Doo, Godzookie, Azrael the Cat, Dollar the Dog, Baby Plas and Gleek The Space-Monkey.

Fan Page: Fat Albert & The Cosby Kids

Fat Albert & The Cosy Kids premiered in 1972, sure, but it wasn't till the 1979/1980 season that they made a drastic change to the show which forever separated the show in to two very distinct "Pre" and "Post" eras.

That's right... THE BROWN HORNET. Just in case the moral message of the show wasn't being ham-fistedly shoved down your throat quite fast enough, they decided to break in to the middle of every episode to have a fictional show WITHIN the show blatantly state and deliver the moral message to you. THat's effin' BRILLIANT!

Please feel free to leave your favorite memories, stories or other thoughts in the comments below. And hey, if this is one of your favorites? Don't forget to go and vote for it in our Best Cartoon of 1980 Poll!

Fan Page: DRAK PACK

When watching The Drak Pack, I like to think of it as a prequel to the Underworld movies :) Feel free to leave a few memories, thoughts, whatever in the comments below! ANd if this is one of your favorites, be sure to vote for it in our Best Cartoon of 1980 Poll!

Fan Page: The All New Popeye Hour

And by "All New Popeye Hour", they meant "1970's Popeye Cartoons mixed with Dinky Dog cartoons"

Other than Dinky Dog, this hour-long show also had the most bizarre/tragic thing I've ever seen; Popeye's "Nephews" (who are definitely "Scooby-Don't" characters, btw) that are so obviously his kids that they even share his exact same physical deformities and speech patterns. And all the more tragic is later on in the 90's when we get "Popeye & Son", there's NO MENTION of the "Nephews". THIS BOTHERS ME!!!

Feel free to discuss below. And hey, if this is one of your favorites? Be sure to go and vote for it over on our Best Cartoon of 1980 Poll!

Poll #4: Best Cartoon of 1983

[Poll #1766003]

Not much sellection this year, but WOW look at the strong contenders! Also not this this is the first year we have a live-action entry in to the voting with "Benji, Zax and The Alien Prince"... I had forgotten that show even existed!
