Heathcliff (aka "The Poor Man's Garfield") had a pretty good run on Saturday mornings in the 80's, this is the fan page dedicated to the programming block that he shared with "Dingbat", a vampire dog (not as cool as it sounds).

Feel free to leave your memories or personal opinions on this cartoon in the comments below, and be sure to go and vote for it in our Best Cartoon of 1981 Poll if it was indeed one of your favorites :)

Heathcliff also got a nice revival a few years later, as per DIC's cartoon in 86. Good stuff overall, but the 81 intro is amusing.

"I'll put on a cowboy hat and moustache, and no one will notice I'm a cat." I miss that kind of suspension of disbelief.

I was born in '83 so the Heathcliff show I remember is the revival from 1984-1986. I'd never seen the intro for this show until just now though. Really classic stuff!

I miss that kind of suspension of disbelief too. I think I just miss the good old days in general.

Like you, I never knew of this version, as I was only familiar with the DIC version. Interesting stuff with this, too.

Indeed, as we now want more realism or, frankly, we've just become too jaded as a culture. I could never imagine this airing without being mocked ruthlessly. Some shows, I don't mind the serious ness, but others, I don't mind the cartoon skeleton with the plunger on his head, you know?

Well, it did have a really catchy intro. I am liking the 81 one, but it isn't quite the same.

Either way, it's all good. And Dingbat amuses me so.

If you happen to be a cat, as well, I'll really be scared. Although, the world needs more 10 gallon hat-based disguises.
