The Real Ghostbusters was without a doubt the most fully realized, well rounded, deeply explored "Universe" of a cartoon series that ever hit Saturday Mornings. The cartoon took the characters and the premise of the theatrical film and ran with it unlike anyone had ever seen before! They were even the first cartoon that I can think of that ever went "Meta" in a serious, completely in character and in continuity way by having an episode where the movie that everybody saw was actually made about THESE Ghostbusters! The show was, is, and always shall be sheer brilliance :)

Please leave your own thoughts or remembrances of The Real Ghostbusters in the comments below :)

I love this cartoon to this day. It was mature, even as it was toned for children. You can watch the show today and still laugh at the smartness of the jokes. I really enjoyed watching the original cartoon, but then it started to change and I could take it or leave it. But the first two seasons are amazing.

I LOVED The Ghostbusters cartoon. I love those movies period. I love Slimer. He's one of my favorite character. And plus it has some fantastic voice actors, like uh, Lorinzo Piano, or whatever his last name is (the guy who voiced Garfield in those cartoons). And there's some other good guys in there too. It was just awesome! :D

This was always my favorite cartoon when I was little--at least until Slimer took over the show. Back when JMS was writing the episodes. My favorite one was the one where Peter was possessed by Watt--I think it was called Mrs. Rogers' Neighborhood.

One of my all-time faves. Great storytelling, great characters, and some of the eps are still in my memory and I wish I could see them again. Like the one where Winston gets to solve a mystery from his favorite (and now deceased)author. Or the one where all the ghosts come out of these holes in this house, and each one is as big or small as the hole it comes out of. And they blow up the house, and then there's a huge hole left, and a huge ghost comes out of that hole. So cool!

The episode was the "Hole in the Wall Gang" I believe and it was one of my favorites too.

Best Saturday morning cartoon ever. ;)

Now completely available on DVD, too.

The first three or four episodes of volume 3 are the original show and the rest are the revamped Slimer episodes. You can see how much and how quickly the show went down hill.

This was probably the best, most well produced, well acted and fun cartoon ever. The storyline were terrific, a great mix of adult and child themes, wonderful background art,The occasional Cthulhu mention, classic villains. My only complaint was the last part of the series when it became Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters. The writers changed, it shifted focus to a younger audience and just became silly.

I always found it amusing that Bill Murray complained that Lorenzo Music (the voice of Pete Venkeman) sounded too much like Garfield because Music did that voice too and then a few years later Bill Murray did the voice of Garfield in the live action movie of the same name. And that Ernie Hudson auditioned for the role of the animated character of Winston, the same role he played but was turned down in favor of Arsenio Hall.

If it doesn't show I am a bit of a fan...

To the point where I was disappointed by the second film because the animated series was higher quality...

Yeah. And after learning JMS's track record in the 80's, his smart-assed comments about "no cute kids and robots" made LOT more sense...as did spacing the teddy bear.
