Fan Page: The Real Ghostbusters
The Real Ghostbusters was without a doubt the most fully realized, well rounded, deeply explored "Universe" of a cartoon series that ever hit Saturday Mornings. The cartoon took the characters and the premise of the theatrical film and ran with it unlike anyone had ever seen before! They were even the first cartoon that I can think of that ever went "Meta" in a serious, completely in character and in continuity way by having an episode where the movie that everybody saw was actually made about THESE Ghostbusters! The show was, is, and always shall be sheer brilliance :)

I always found it amusing that Bill Murray complained that Lorenzo Music (the voice of Pete Venkeman) sounded too much like Garfield because Music did that voice too and then a few years later Bill Murray did the voice of Garfield in the live action movie of the same name. And that Ernie Hudson auditioned for the role of the animated character of Winston, the same role he played but was turned down in favor of Arsenio Hall.
If it doesn't show I am a bit of a fan...

Yeah. And after learning JMS's track record in the 80's, his smart-assed comments about "no cute kids and robots" made LOT more sense...as did spacing the teddy bear.
