Ghostbusters. Dude, JMS (aka "the Great Maker") was writing! They flew an amazing amount of crap under the radar, kept a decent continuity, and even managed to translate the characters with relative fidelity while keeping it G-rated. Considering the movie was a cheerfully raunchy comedy with Ackroyd and Murray fresh off SNL, this was no small feat!
I've always been amazed with Ghostbusters and impressed with how they gave these shallow, one-note characters an actual back-story and made them real. Ray was from a small town. Egon had a childhood encounter with a "Tooth Fairy" that left him emotionally distant for the rest of his life. That stuff went DEEP!
One of the things that keeps me coming back to cartoons, even when I'm well past drinking age, is how much storytelling you could cram into a 22 minute window, even with the restrictions and executive-mandated idiocy.
