It is generally accepted and agreed upon that THIS SHOW was "The Beginning Of The End" for Saturday Mornings. Up till this point the Parental Watchdog Groups, Marketing Executives and Overzealous Censors had only had an effect on NEW cartoons being produced... but at 8:00 Saturday morning in 1985 on ABC, a precedent was set that changed the entire dynamic of Saturday Morning Cartoons FOREVER.

After numerous years of volleying the Looney Tunes cartoons back and forth between CBS and ABC (resulting in a few seasons where there were Looney Tunes cartoons on both channels under different names), CBS finally backed out of the bidding and let ABC snatch up the exclusive network broadcast rights - but at a cost. Marketing, Censors and Watchdogs had just a few simple requests...

No Speedy Gonzales (because he was racist), and no Tweety Bird (because he was GAY).

Speedy was racist because he spoke with an accent, and Tweety was Gay because he spoke was pretty and spoke in a high voice.

Despite the ludicrous accusations, ABC went ahead and pulled the Speedy and Tweety cartoons that had been running for the past 15 years without question or hesitation. The Censors had their foothold - NOTHING was safe from this point forward. They could now retro-actively censor, edit and otherwise ban whatever they liked for any old reason, knowing that there would be no questioning of The Great And Powerful Standards & Practices Board.

Saturday Morning, was doomed :(

Last week you all voted the first season of The Daffy Duck Show as the best thing in the NBC Saturday Morning Line-Up over a pretty impressive list of contenders such as The Flintstones, Godzilla and even BATMAN!

Today is an ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN to determine which cartoon of 1980 wa the BEST. To make things even more difficult and/or fair, I've also included the runner-up from each network so the votes can be more evenly spread. And please remember... this is for *SCIENCE*!

Starting at 9am on Saturday Morning at your local CBS affiliate, you could see the long-running Bugs Bunny / Road Runner Show! This cartoon show, which was just a repackaging of Warner Brothers cartoons that had been produced up till 1962, bounced around the Saturday Morning TV dial so often you never really knew what channel it was going to show up on. But in the morning of 1980, it was on CBS...and it was like a Rosetta Stone of Childhood Memories. Parents, grandparents, older siblings... EVERYBODY knew the 5-to-8-minute adventures of Bugs Bunny and friends and so this cartoon was a common language that could bring generations together :)

(Also ran at 9:00 in 1981, 9:30 in 1982/1983)

In the interest of saving myself a bit of time, I'm going to group all the Looney Tunes package shows in this one post and try to tag it accordingly.

Why? Because look at this list:
  • The Bugs Bunny / Road Runner Show
  • The Daffy Duck Show
  • The Sylvester & Tweety / Daffy & Speedy Show
  • The Bugs Bunny / Looney Tunes Comedy Hour
  • The Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show

Every single one of those shows was the exact same show; recycle some of the hundreds of hours of Looney Tunes cartoon shorts from the past (then) 30 years for consumption of the masses. But unlike the Hannah-Barbara repackaging hours (discussed elsewhere in this community) where they just took last year's cartoons and smashed them together to make a "Power Hour", The Looney Tunes were a special cross-over cartoon that was important to the success of Saturday mornings in general. Grammy and Grampy remembered watching the cartoons in the theaters, Mom and Dad remembered seeing them on TV as early as the 1960's, and now the kids of today had something in common with the previous generations to talk about and make everybody feel good about Saturday :)

So let's here it for Bugs and his pals! Share your thoughts, memories, and other discussion points in the comments below! Oh and hey! If this was one of your favorites? Don't forget to go and vote for it in our Best Cartoon of 1980 Poll! I *think* 1980 is the only year that will have Bugs Bunny represented, even though the Looney Tunes were a staple of Saturday Mornings all through the 1980's just because I don't have the space to list them every year :)
