1980's SMHRS Build-The-Excitement Poll #2 - MULTITASKING

Our last Hype Poll showed some pretty promising results! Despite our ages being ALL OVER THE PLACE, it was agreed that the "Golden Age" of 1980's cartoons was in fact the 1985 - 1986 season! That's awesome!

Today, in preparation for our next Watch-Along (which is THIS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 AT 7AM), let's talk about one of the hidden benefits of adolescent developmental television binging - The ability to Multitask!

It is my belief that our secondary viewing habits of our childhoods developed the enviable ability to perform multiple tasks at once.

Painting minis for gaming with my brother took a big stage, if we weren't dorking around with He-Man, GI Joe and/or Star Wars figures.

(Maybe the fumes helped make the years more ~mystical, LOL.)

I didn't start the mini-painting till... hmm. I guess, yeah, right around '86 - '87! I remember that part of what put me at ease for accepting D&D (since I had been raised in a "Rock-N-Roll, D&D and Sexy TV are the work of The Devil" Catholic environment) was that the Game Shop I was introduced to had a full set of the YA Dungeons & Dragons Cartoon novelizations for sale :) I remember painting my first set - "Basic Heroes" I think it was called - while watching the cartoon and wondering which character on the show was which character in my box :)

I played with my Barbies and/or play-doh, ate my sugary cereal of choice (usually Lucky Charms or Fruity Pebbles).

I just ate my breakfast cereal and drooled over the cartoons, and no, I am no multitasker. I have to finish one before the other.

Makes sense... you're a 1980 Kid, right on the cusp of cut-off for having learned to do stuff while watching. I blame "The Munchies" - the PSA that warned us if we just sat inside watching cartoons all day we'd be bored and fat! Quote, "Get outside, find stuff to do, gut Munching off your mi-ind; soon you'll find you're feeling great, and the Munchies left be-hi-ind"

I still ended up fat, sure... and I still sat inside all Saturday morning... but I did stuff while I watched because I didn't want The Munchies to get me!

The Munchies and i were so close, we shared an apartment for a couple of years out of high school. They still send me a box of those Danish shortbread cookies every Christmas, and coupons whenever a new Five Guys opens up.

Generally I sat on the most comfortable piece of sittin' furniture and ate cereal. Lots and lots of cereal.

Really? I figured you (and really, MOST artist kids) as being the type who sat there all morning long with a pad of paper, pencils, crayons, etc and just doodle doodle doodle all morning long. SO MANY ARTISTS I know say variations of the same thing - "I got my statr on Saturday mornings, trying to draw the perfect Scooby-Doo/Bugs Bunny/Magilla Gorilla"!

I tended to do my drawing at night, trying to copy pictures out of books. ;) TV shows moved too fast, and I was too busy paying attention to the story!

That said, Scooby Doo was a big influence on my art style. But I never actually tried to draw that gang much.
