1981 10:00 on ABC: GOLDIE GOLD AND ACTION JACK

Goldie Gold and Action Jack was a Ruby-Spears cartoon from 1981 that aired for 13 episodes at 10:00 Saturday mornings on ABC. It also aired at 9:00 starting in the Spring of 1982 (the second half of the season), and that's kind of important... remember what was so weird about the 1980 Saturday Morning line-up? NO CARTOONS STARTED AT 10:00! This is the first time I've ever had to use the 10:00 tag in this community, and it feels WEIRD!

This show woulda/coulda/shoulda been a prime-time action/comedy along the lines of "Moonlighting" (the TV show that introduced the world to that old guy from the new GI Joe movie - kids, ask your parents).

Goldie Gold was a super-rich and super-beautiful (teenage?) owner of a newspaper, Action Jack was her ace reporter friend (boy friend?). Each episode had them being pulled in to some random action-adventure that lead them to uncovering some great front-page news story.

I think Richie Rich is going to win because he has a Batman-trained butler, a mad scientist and an invulnerable military-grade robot that he uses as a housekeeper. Goldy Gold has a snarky reporter friend and a newspaper.

I can see why the stations went with the timeslots they did in some cases. A show that is starting in the middle of two other hour-long competing shows? It's likely to suffer because not many kids are going to stop halfway through another show to switch. I did, but I think I'm a bit out of the ordinary. I used to pick up the TV Guide every week and circled everything I wanted to watch. When I'd visit my friends, though, they just waited for the current show to end and then channel-surfed until they settled on something.

Jack Kirby did some INCREDIBLE stuff for Ruby-Spears :) I think I have a book about it? Nope, it's a set of trading cards with TONS of artwork and concepts that he did for them which never got used. Even in the 80's, the man could never stop drawing!

Did anyone else ever get the impression that Jack was hired by Goldie's parents to keep her from getting into trouble? Or at the very least, to get her OUT of trouble once she managed to get herself into trouble?
