1981 9:30 on ABC: Laverne & Shirley In The Army

Laverne & Shirley in the Army (which never actually had the words "In The Army" in their logo or title sequence) is a 1981 Hanna-Barbera cartoon series that aired on ABC Saturday mornings for a grand total of 13 episodes. Based on the "You're In The Army Now," episode of the Laverne & Shirley sit-com that aired on November 15, 1979, best friends Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney find themselves enlisted in the U.S. Army and often get involved in weird top-secret projects with their drill sergeant ("Sgt. Squealy", voiced by Ron "Horshack" Palillo from "Welcome Back Kotter") who is always threatening to report them to his superior, Sgt. Turnbuckle.

Oh, and for some unknown reason, Sergeant Squealy? Yeah, he's an anthropomorphic pig. NO OTHER TALKING ANIMAL CHARACTERS IN THE ENTIRE SHOW.

Only 13 episodes, really? Felt like it went forever. And yes, it was an odd duck; didn't it follow on the heels of a Happy Days cartoon, too?

Surely there was an "...In Space!" followup?

In grand HB tradition, the existing 13 episodes were re-packaged along with Fonz re-runs and bundled together to stretch out the hand full of brand-new Mork & Mindy cartoons in 1982... but more on that next month when I get to covering '82 :)

Poor Laverne & Shirley never got their "INNNN SPAAAAAAAAACE" season... that was more of a 60's/70's thing that had fizzled out by the 80's :(

lol probably some weird sub-law included in the Affirmative Action laws that can be traced back ot the Johnson administration, some political lobbying favoritism where Scrooge McDuck donated to the Johnson Reelection Fund in exchange for a "Equality For Cartoon Animals" rider on the bill..

Wow, what the actual duck? I was far too young to remember this, but I'm intrigued. I did like watching the old Laverne and Shirley episodes.

In the earlier days of The Internet, I paid my rent by writing and selling custom fan-fic television scripts to fans; Laverne & Shirley was my second biggest money maker (right after Gilligan's Island) so I'm pretty fond of the girls as well :)

This cartoon would fit in to the continuity and rhythm of the actual sit-com seamlessly if not for the talking pig :)

It stuck pretty close to the spirit of the original.
