Garfield & Friends was an excellently written and produced cartoon, higher in quality than most kids could ever really notice. I remember switching channels whenever the U.S. Acres (aka "Orson's Farm") segments came on, but now that I've seen the cartoon in my adult life I know that they're every bit as good as the Garfield parts. I even derived my own personal attitude from one of their quotes! There are only two kinds of problems in life; those you can do something about and those you can't. If it's something you CAN do something about, don't worry because you know how to handle it and if it's something you CAN'T do something about don't worry because there's nothing you can do about it!

I dug this one just because I'd been a fan of the early Garfield stuff, when Davis was truly in his heyday of weirdness. Garfield was the first comic strip that ever made me laugh out loud, circa 1982-83. My best friend back then and I were manic for the strip -- his cat was even named Garfield, we had a 'fanclub', all of that. I still have my stuffed Garfield around here somewhere, and the books of collected strips. We all know Davis hasn't likely had much to do with the franchise for years now, but the man was one of the original comic strip geniuses.

I'll second what volare said. In terms of conversions of comics to television, it was a rather direct and most enjoyable conversion. It took me a while, but I did like the US Acres shorts (particularly Wade's character, as played by the late Howard Morris).

One of the best, and sadly, can't be duplicated.

I am amused by Animated Liz's rejections of Jon, when that is no longer the case in the strip. It's almost like something completely different, having grown up on this. Oh, well. Good stuff, and CN had been re-airing it in recent years, so that's another plus.

Garfield's "birthdate" is one week after mine! This made his strip required reading and this show required viewing. We do share that enjoyment of Italian food, strangely enough...

I hate to admit it but my favorite part about that show happened in the 90s when the theme song changed to "We're ready to party". It was rather catchy and I catch myself singing it whenever there is a party involved. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-N_j18piqkU

The show itself wasn't bad but...I could never get over the fact that Peter Vankman was Garfield.

I loved this show. But, I remember a different opening. "We're (we're) Ready (ready) To (to) Party(party). We're ready to party we're ready. I hope you bring lots of spaghetti. Come on in, come to the place where fun never ends. Come on in it's time to party with garfield and friends...

I liked the US Acres segments even more than the Garfield segments. The Garfield jokes were getting a little old for me. I'd read all the books and watched all the specials. US Acres was fresh and new. :)
