1983 8:00 on ABC: THE NEW SCOOBY AND SCRAPPY-DOO SHOW

ABC Television brought us this, the SIXTH incarnation of Scooby-Doo, at 8:00 Saturday morning in 1983 courtesy of Hanna-Barbera. For those of you keeping score, THIS is the version that featured Scooby, Scrappy, Shaggy and the triumphant return of DAPHNE BLAKE, who hadn't been in an episode since 1979! They drove around the country solving supernatural mysteries (usually lasting only 11 minutes but occasionally being a two-part story that took the entire half-hour to complete).

It's my opinion that the newer "Mystery Incorporated" cartoon from Cartoon Network (which was absolutely BRILLIANT and you should go watch season 1 RIGHT NOW) borrowed heavily from this particular incarnation, with a bit more serious approach to the mysteries than before while also being slightly self-aware of just how silly this stuff could be. Moved to the 9am time slot in the Spring of 1984.

For the official 1984 Fall Season, they renamed the show to "The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries" and made no other changes to the show, just producing 13 more episodes. Moved to 10:30.

1982 11:00 on ABC: The Scooby & Scrappy Puppy Hour

In 1982 at 11am on ABC was a little slice of cult legend, misdirected ambition and same-old same-old in the form of the hour-long Scooby & Scrappy Puppy Hour. This show was the first (and I think only?) collaboration between the Saturday Morning Juggernauts, Ruby-Spears and Hanna-Barbera. The first half-hour of the show consisted of three 7-minute shorts, a mix of "Scooby and Scrappy-Doo" (the version where Scooby, Scrappy and Shaggy travel across the country as the "Fearless Detective Agency" and get involved in typical spy or criminal cases) and "Scrappy and Yabba-Doo" (Scrappy-Doo's adventures with his uncle Yabba-Doo and Deputy Dusty in the wild west), followed by a full 30-minute episode of "The Puppy's New Adventures" in the second half-hour. The Scooby/Scrappy-related shorts were written and voiced at Hanna-Barbera Productions, but animated and edited by Ruby-Spears Enterprises.

(Also aired at 10:00 starting in the Spring of 1983)

Saturday Morning Watch-Along POSTPONED...

...And I think we all know who's to blame here.

To be perfectly honest, I had completely forgotten that we had anything planned for this morning and wa focusing on the July 20th watch-along, so the ball-dropper here was *ME* (though I still somehow think Scrappy-Doo was involved).

Folks, let me make you a Captain Slinky Brand Promise (tm) right here and now that you'll ALWAYS know when we've got a watch-along coming up that I'm aware of because the week leading up to it will b full of annoying Reminder Posts and Polls. These posts serve two purposes - They get everybody in the community psyched for the watch-along, AND they provide a constant daily reminder between [livejournal.com profile] aurora77 and myself to take care of the 427 different little details before the watch-along starts :)

I'm terribly sorry to all of you who may have gotten up early to watch along with us only to find no links, no chat room and no explanation :( Think of it a being like one of those rare Saturday mornings where you'd wake up and turn on the TV only to find ome stupid sports announcer saying "Welcome to our live coverage of the College Sport-Ball Tournament, coming to you LIVE all morning from the beautiful Atlantonia Sportballing Rink!" (or whatever they ay about ports, I'm not really familiar with the stuff)

Meanwhile, feel free to download, print out and punish this lovely Scrappy-Doo Cube Craft figure! Teach him a well deserved lesson about having dirupted our plans!

(Actually, if you *do* do that I'd love to see pictures!)

1980 9:30 on ABC: The Richie Rich / Scooby-Doo Show (And Scrappy Too!)

Tune in at 9:30 on Saturday morning in 1980 to your local ABC affiliate and you'll see "The Richie Rich / Scooby-Doo Show (And Scrappy Too!)" Yeah that's the actual title... Scrappy even ruins the NAME of a show!

This was another "package show" produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, featuring a pretty lenient mix of re-runs and new content. This was the sixth Scooby-Doo saturday morning cartoon show, and was the only Hanna-Barbera package series for which Scooby-Doo was given second billing. But that's understandable, considering that this was Richie Rich's animated debut :)

(Also aired in the 8:00 spot in 1981)

DON'T PASS THIS UP JUST BECAUSE IT HAS SCRAPPY-DOO IN IT!!! This intro is one of the few glimpses of "The Puppy's Adventures" that you'll be able to find on the Internet! It is a low-down dirty SHAME that The Puppy's Adventures got lumped in with Scooby and his crew :( No laugh track, no wacky antics, just a puppy and a rag-tag crew of dogs on a journey to find the Puppy's owner.

IT WAS EPIC!

What is it the kids these days say? "Haters gonna hate"? Is that "Jiggy" enough? Am I speaking "Dope"?

The title of the cartoon was just "Scooby-Doo And Scrappy-Doo", and it introduced the world to a cultural MILESTONE known as Scrappy-Doo.

Now I don't have much of an opinion in any direction regarding the entire Scooby-Doonivers of cartoons... Scooby-Doo is not as beloved to me as it is to so many others. To me, Scooby-Doo was a bottom feeder. Channel m7 has College Football, channel 5 has Golf, channel 12 has some religious show on... oh, Scooby-Doo is on channel 4. And since I'm certainly not going to waste this sunny Saturday morning on dragging my fat little 7-year-old butt outside like my Mom keeps saying I should do, I guess I'll watch Scooby-Doo.

Scrappy-Doo was a bit annoying, sure... but no more annoying than a cowardly hippie with an eating disorder and a giant dog with a speech impediment (imho).
