1983 Saturday Mornings on NBC: ONE TO GROW ON

I figured I'd launch my listing of 1983 with a special mention of NBC's "One To Grow On", my own personal favorite of all the 1980's Saturday Morning Public Service spots!

Schoolhouse Rock over on ABC was good, don't get me wrong... but those were most assuredly a product of the 1970's.

In The News over on CBS... did anybody actually ever watch that on purpose? And once again, it was very much a product of the 70's.

But One To Grow On? That's ALL 80's, BABY! Beginning in 1983, these two-part, 1-minute commercials usually came at the end of some cartoon. Unlike the "The More You Know" campaign that replaced it in 1989 with its "Hi I'm a celebrity, Crack is Wack, stay off drugs" shooting star log and finish, One To Grow On had the celebrity in question watch the video, then comment on what we should learn from it, and then finish the video.

There were lots of different PSA things they tried throughout the 80s, but this was one of the ones that stuck. In the News was boring most of the time. The More You Know was just...eh. not that great. There were several that they kept airing from the 70s, like Time for Timer and I remember some weird one with an owl. Anyway, One to Grow On was my favorite.

Owl... Ya mean Woodsy? Give a hoot, don't pollute!

Man we should have a day/week/whatever dedicated solely to all the freaking bizarre PSAs that aired, those things are a class unto themselves! Reruns from the 70s still count if they aired in the 80s RIGHT? ;)

...I may or may not be volunteering to do this... e.e

Oh yeah! Woodsy!

I also vaguely remember a frightening PSA about taking care of your teeth. Anybody remember anything specific about it?

I remember that one, but it's not what I was thinking of.

My favorite was the one with Mr. T.

Oh god it was funny. XD

I would be. All over a PSA weekend!!! I love those, even the ones that creeped me out as a kid. In fact, there is one I remember that I can't find anywhere!
