Saturday Morning LIVES!

In the name of preserving our great little community, I have decided to migrate the whole darned thing over here to DREAMWIDTH. In case you didn't know, LiveJournal (our original home) has quite a few problems going on right now, not the least of which being that the entire domain sets off all the bells and alarms of most cyber-security software right now. I recieved a couple of complaints about this, so I moved it!

Feel free to chime in here if you're still interested in a 1980's Saturday Morning Historical Reenactment!

The Fight Club Theory Of Scooby-Doo

fight club

Submitted for your consideration: Fred and Daphne never existed; they are "Tyler Durden" (Fight Club spoiler) fantasy personalities created by a drug-addled Shaggy and Velma. Shaggy, the dimwitted gangly slacker stoner, fantasizes a friend who is a natural leader with classic good looks, a strong physical build, and naturally brilliant. Velma, the dumpy outcast smart girl who is always overlooked imagines a best friend who is a beautiful debutante who can always rely on others coming to her rescue.

Watch the old episodes closely - Fred and Daphne never actually *do* anything, it's always Shaggy and Velma who get stuff done.

Further proof can be seen in their clothing choices - Shaggy and Velma dress in regular clothes. Fred wears an Ascot, Daphne dresses in a purple mini-dress with white go-go boots. It's like Shaggy and Velma are buying clothes from Goodwill, and Fred and Daphne are almost *cosplaying*.

"Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?" is where it all begins. The IRL story is that Shaggy convinces Velma (a very straight-laced "Good Girl" to drop out of school and drive around the country with him. They spend all their time in the back of the van getting stoned and discussing "Mysteries" like ghosts, and Velma blows holes in all of Shaggy's stoner-talk with actual facts and knowledge. Her standard end-of-argument statement is always along the lines of "See, it's not a GHOST, it's THE MAN! It all comes down to MONEY! It's a huge conspiracy where they want you to believe in all this hocus-pocus but it all comes down to an old dude in a mask trying to get more money".

Oh, but it goes deeper. "The New Scooby-Doo Movies" where they teamed up with various random "Celebrities" was just when their delusions were fueled by the acquisition of a little black-and-white TV set. Don Knotts, Laurel & Hardy, The Three Stooges, Batman and Robin, Dick Van Dyke - all "Special Gust Stars" that one would see in plentiful re-runs on their little black-and-white portable TV set in the 1970's.

Then things get sad when you consider that in the 80's it was just Shaggy, Scooby and Scrappy-Doo. Velma obviously had either a miscarriage or an abortion which resulted in their break-up. Unable to summon his delusion-friends any more, it's just Shaggy and Scooby now... and a Puppy that Shaggy projects all his hopes and dreams that he had for his own child some day. He'll be BRAVE! He'll be FUNNY! He'll look just like Velma and... No, not like Velma. Velma is gone. Have to remember that. Have to keep my head straight. My Son... he... he'll look just like Scooby. And so he goes to investigate all those "Mysteries" that he had explored with Velma, only now? Now they're REAL. He can no longer see through simple costumes! His reality is so fractured now that he sees Vampires, Werewolves and Ghosts EVERYWHERE! And he's frightened... very, very frightened...

AND THEN IT GETS WEIRDER!!! Because the *next* season features Shaggy, Scooby, Scrappy... and DAPHNE?!?!? Shaggy is grasping, trying to remember any time in his life where he felt happiness or joy and can only remember those times with Velma... only it's not Velma he sees in his memories, it's Velma's fractured-psyche Goddess Avatar! The long-haired beauty in the flamboyant purple dress and go-go boots! And she's there for him!

I think that those final seasons, the ones before "The 13 Ghosts Of Scooby-Doo", when watched in the proper order are a detailed account of Shaggy's suicide by heroine overdose :/

Scooby... Dooby... doooooooo... Where are... yooooooou... we've got some... work... to do... nowwwwwwwww...

(Reposted from my own LJ account to combine afterthoughts I have had on the subject and have a singular post that I can point the rest of the internet towards. I *think* I may be the first person to suggest this theory)

Favorite 1980's Saturday Morning Character

OF COURSE when I decide to comit to this community, stuff falls apart all around me and I struggle to fit it in - sorry, folks!

Meanwhile, 1980's Saturday Morning Historical Recreation Society member Bonnie has started a question over on Twitter that I hashtagged as #80sSarurday that you may wish to participate in either here or on Twitter (@Saturday1980s) because it's fun to simply declare your preference, sure, but I kind of need more room to defend my answer than a simple 140 characters.

So simply put, which 1980's Saturday Morning Character do you think was the best?

Post and defend your answers in the comments below or on Twitter!

As a starting point, I suggest that Rubik The Amazing Cube is superlatively the greatest because he has the word "Amazing" right in his name! Only Spider-Man and his friends share that distinction!

1980's SMHRS FRIDAY FILLER POLL: The Many Works Of Hal Sutherland

I'll be wrapping up Hal Sutherland Week with this simple poll, I swear! We'll be back to our regularly scheduled 1980's Saturday Morning Memories & Reviews come Monday, but for now... the man deserves tribute. SO our poll today is all about those cartoons of his that were in heavy circulation in the 80's! Please note that I *know* Star Trek, Waldo Kitty and Fat Albert are technically 70's cartoons, but they all had heavy circulation in the 80's so I'll allow it - Filamtion DC Super Hero stuff, however, had extremely limited distribution in the 80's due to the Super Friends owning that at the time...

[Poll #1953495]

Final Word RE: Hal Sutherland's Death

In an email shared with me by Rod Cockle (a local artist who spent many memorable lunches with Hal and owns his original Studio desk), Hal Sutherland's daughter Lisa had this to say:
"Hi, I am Hal's daughter, and replying to you from dad' computer, due to having some very sad news.
Sadly, on 1/16/14, we lost my dad to this world due to health complications related to gallbladder..."

If anybody here likes to do Wikipedia editing, it would be great if this information could be updated there.

This really should have been a bigger deal - a few blogs, a facebook post or two here and there, and nothing else. No CNN, no Reddit, no... uhm... what websites do entertainment news? NOTHING for the man who shaped what action/adventure animation of the 70's and 80's looked like!

Confirmation: Hal Sutherlnd is indeed Dead :(

I finally have confirmation (via Jerry Beck of the Cartoon Research website) through Hal's daughter, Lisa, that he has indeed passed away. Not wanting to pry or seem insensitive, I haven't yet asked for the actual date or cause of death.

To those of us who worship 80's cartoons, Hal Sutherland will forever be remembered for three things:

Having his name turn in to The Sorceress...

Making Space-Cowboy He-Man...

... And being the animating force behind all the re-run filler that ran on your local stations while the NEW cartoons played on the Big Three (ABC, NBC, CBS). Stuff like Star Trek, The Archies, The Batman/Superman/Aquaman cartoons that didn't seem to fit in with the versions you saw on the Super Friends, and those weird Popeye cartoons that weren't like the REALLY old ones they played along with vintage Tom & Jerry, Mighty Mouse and Heckle & Jeckyl cartoons but weren't as mind-numbingly awful as the "All New Popeye Adventures" over on CBS.

As the story goes (and I may be misremembering this and/or mixing up multiple versions of the same story), Filmation became a company kind of by accident. Hal Sutherland and Lou Scheimer were both animators working for various production studios when one of those companies just had too much work and not enough budget. Hal and Lou said "Well heck let's make a little limited partnership that can take over some of these jobs for a few weeks". They finished up the work and were prepared to be unemployed again when Norm Prescott called and said "Hey you guys wanna take a crack at making a Superman cartoon?" and they said "Meh, sure, why not, got nuthin' better to do right now".

1985 9:00 on NBC: THE SMURFS SEASON 5 (SPECIAL MENTION)

I try not to go back to shows that ran for multiple seasons, preferring to focus only on the shows that premiered each year. But this... this deserves special mention. For this, the 985 season of The Smurfs, was the season that the Smurfs Jumped The Shark; the show started it's downward spiral here and never recovered.

The culprits, as is often the case with shows that Jump The Shark, was the inclusion of children and animals.

"The Smurflings" were a group of adult Smurfs who had been de-aged by Father Time's clock running backwards, and a little girl Smurf created the same way Smurfette had been made, only using less magical clay. Long story short - The Smurfs was now a show about dealing with these young Smurfs, rather than a show about the Smurfs themselves.

Also joining the cast this season was "Puppy", a thousand-year-old dog who remained young due to the magic locket he wears on his dog collar.

While We Wait: AWESOME FREE HE-MAN GAME!!!

While we wait to hear any type of actual confirmation regarding the death of Hal Sutherland, please enjoy this most excellent tribute to the man and his work -the most awesome Free He-Man Game EVAR!

90% positive that this death rumor is bogus, as only two Star Trek websites, one Animation blog and Wikipedia have reported it and all of them are referencing the extremely vague Filmation Fan Facebook Page post as their "source". Wish I know how to edit Wikipedia properly, get that stuff taken down till there's an actual confirmation...

Hal Sutherland Death Rumor Update

I drove by Hal Sutherland's house this morning, nothing out of the ordinary there that one would associate with a death in the family (extra cars, etc)... but I was too nervous to just go up and ring the doorbell at 8am asking "Hi, uhm... is Hal dead?"

Maybe I'll muster the courage later today...

So far, the "source" of the rumor seems to be a post on the Filmation Fan Facebook Page, which has no links or sources of it's own. The general rule of thumb for these types of rumors is The Rule Of Three - as soon as you see it in three separate sources that are not sighting each other as sources, you can assume it's real. If you have a blog post that refers to another blog post as the source, it's probably not legit.

Oh I hope it's not legit :(

Hal Sutherland Death Rumors

Last night our Twitter account was tagged about a dozen times with the tweets and re-tweets claiming that legendary Filmation co-founder Hal Sutherland had died. I've been unable to confirm this rumor yet, but he lives about 5 minutes away from my house so I'll drive by there this morning and casually/discreetly try to ascertain if he's still, y'know... "With Us".

Not that any members of this community would need a reminder, but what you'd probably remember Hal best from would be He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe. Most of his Saturday Morning work was done in the 1970's on stuff like the Star Trek animated series, Flash Gordon, and all the pre-Super Friends DC Comics super heroes (Batman, Aquaman, Superman etc).

Fingers crossed that he's still with us!

1985 9:00 on ABC: EWOKS (AKA "STAR WARS: EWOKS", AKA "THE ALL-NEW EWOKS ADVENTURES")

At 9:00 on Saturday morning in 1985 was a cartoon that lasted only 2 seasons but went by up to 4 different names and had no less than 2 different theme songs, "Ewoks" (which also aired as "Star Wars: Ewoks), "The All-New Ewoks Adventures" and "The Ewoks & Droids Adventure Hour"). Depending on your geographic location, you may have seen an opening for the show that looked more like this:

(This is the one I always saw, and I think it has something to do with having watched on a Canadian TV station).

Produced by Canadian animation studio Nelvana, there were 35 different half-hour episodes produced that were meant as a continuation/sequel to the wildly popular made-for-TV live-action movies "Caravan Of Courage" and "Battle For Endor". The first season seems to have been written for actual Star Wars fans with intricate relationships, cross-over storylines and recurring characters that actually added to the mythology and history of the Ewoks and their little moon of Endor. The second season, supposedly at the request of the network and against the wishes of Lucasfilm, was aimed more at younger kids.

Ewoks had three things going for it that really elevated it from the gutters of having been the "Jar Jar" of the pre-prequels Star Wars universe* - it had continuity, it had no laugh-track, and it had an actual Series Finale.

The final episode, "Battle For The Sun Star", was actually aired out-of-order on Saturday mornings and was then later re-aired as a stand-alone special that officially marked the end of the series. The plot, which depicts the Empire discovering the moon of Endor and deciding to build the new Death Star in the same orbit around Endor, firmly places the Ewoks cartoon in official Star Wars cannon right between Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi (which is pretty darned cool if you ask me).

So what do you think? Any memories regarding the Ewoks? Leave 'em in the comments below :)

*(I had always wondered if Jar-Jar Binks could have somehow been redeemed with a single season of a "The Gungans" cartoon series...)

Excuses & Returns Department

Two deaths, a solid two months of illness, The Holidays and a new part-time job have kept me from my maintainerly duties here at the 1980's Saturday Morning Historical Recreation Society... and I'm sorry. Also, to be completely honest, my personal viewing habits have been dipping further and further in to the 1970's end of Saturday Mornings and the early 90's end of Nickelodeon (most specifically, I'm digging Grape Ape and Clarissa Explains It All).

WHEN WE LAST LEFT OUR DAILY UPDATES, we were right in the middle of Saturday Morning 1985, the cusp of reaching the pinnacle of 1980's Saturday Mornings. We were also doing a weekly Friday Poll to try and determine the greatest of the great Saturday Mornings, and a weekend edition round-up of ABC Weekend Special reviews.

With luck, I will be ready to continue on my mission to catalog, review and share every main-stream Saturday Morning cartoon of the 1980's (FOR SCIENCE!) starting tomorrow morning!

All I ask of you is to read and comment a bit so I know somebody's out there and listening - I am a vain, insecure creature that thrives in an environment of adoration and attention :) Thanks!

Why Did That Cartoon Get Cancelled, Anyways?

Mark Evanier (70's and 80's cartoon/sit-com/comic book writer) answered the age-old question of "Why Did That Wildly Popular Cartoon Show Get Cancelled" (in this case, "Garfield & Friends"). That there's a link to the original post, or you can just read it here- it's an incredibly detailed account of just why long-running shows like Garfield & Friends, The Smurfs and others leave our lives. It's also a kind of back-door explanation of why some other long-running shows such as Super Friends stayed on the air by changing their title every other year or so - "Okay, so you won't pay more for Super Friends, but how about a NEW DEAL for 'Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show'?"

The whole story right behind this cut )

Realavant To Our Interests: Dungeons & Dragon DVD

GREETINGS 1980'S SATURDAY MORNING ENTHUSIASTS!!! I know, it's been a long time and I'm sorry for that, things are crazy in my life right now in a bad, time-consuming, life-changing, universe-spanning, Doctor-regenerating way and I just haven't had ANY tme to dedicate to our little group :(

HOWEVER! THIS NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT TO YOUR ATTENTION!!!

Perennial 1980's Saturday Morning Historical Recreation Society favorite DUNGEONS & DRAGONS THE COMPLETE SERIES is on sale at Amazon.com for just FIVE DOLLARS!!!

This is the "First Release" that the studio is trying to clear out - JUST THE EPISODES. All 27 original episodes, no extras, no bells, no whistles, no inserts, no D&D module to play at home, JUST CARTOONS.

Despite the lack of bonus features and extras, this is an excellent set to own that will soon have a bit of historical value - it's the only edition that has all the original music (CITATION NEEDED - have not confirmed this personally, but I know that several previous releases of the series have a different musical score because rights could not be obtained).

Go and buy a few copies while they're still available! FIVE BUCKS! That's like TWENTY CENTS PER EPISODE!!!

Time for me to finally upgrade from my VHS copies I guess :)

Lou Scheimer Tribute Post

As I'm sure you've all heard by now (mainly because of all your personal messages to me asking if I would post about it here in the 1980's Saturday Morning Historical Reenactment Society community), Filmation cartoon producer Lou Scheimer died earlier this week at the age of 84.

SHORT LIST OF WHAT YOU KNOW HIM FROM: Fat Albert, Star Trek The Animated Series, He-Man, Archie, The New Adventures of Batman, Gilligan's Planet... so many more.

Meeting Mr. Scheimer was one of the low points in my early days of animation fandom, one that I've tried to just block out and put behind me but I'll recount it here for all y'all as best as I remember.

It was the early 90's and i was living (temporarily) in Anaheim California with my Brother and his wife. I had just graduated high school so OF COURSE i knew EVERYTHING and my opinions were MUCH more valid and important than those of anyone else (I was SUCH an ASS). My Brother and his wife were very heavy in to the (then recent) hobby of "Animation Artwork Investment" - they bought a lot of animation cells and, as a result, were invited to all sorts of Gallery Events that I had no interest in because they were usually 1960's Warner Brothers stuff (Bugs Bunny and the likes), which I had NO interest in because I was much more sophisticated than that and only collected Super Hero things. One day they were invited to a Filmation Animation Sale preview gallery showing and I tagged along because I hoped to see some of those early DC Comics cels they had made back in the 60's.

We got there and I complained the whole time I was there. "Filmation cartoons are the WORST!" and "Ugh who would make stuff like this ON PURPOSE?" and other vitally important opinions of mine were expressed loudly and to anyone who would pause near me long enough for me to speak. One of the people I forced my opinions on to just shrugged at me and said "Hey, we did the best we could with the money we had" and then a large man in a very nice suit asked me to please leave. I tried to ignore him, the large man then put his hand on my shoulder and said "C'mon, buddy, let's go" and I was escorted out of the building.

The large man informed me that THAT was mister Scheimer and how he was a saint of a man and they didn't need this kind of grief at their Gallery Showing and a bunch of other stuff that I ignored and argued against because I was 18 and stupid and vain and ignorant and AAAAAARGH!!!! I HATE THIS STORY SO MUCH!!!

So over the years my appreciation for Animation History grew, and through all my research that ever crossed over in to Filmation History the facts remained the same - Filmation could - and WOULD - make cartoons cheaper than anybody else, and would keep the jobs (or at least the majority of them) here in the USA using all the master animators that had become unemployed thanks to the other animation studios shipping all their jobs overseas. He was a master of "Making it up on the back-end" - making the cartoon at a loss so he could get a piece of the merchandising action and then using those profits to pay all those animators who needed work.

So there's my story. Please feel free to leave your own remembrances, thoughts and whatnot in the comments below :)
