Authenticity vs. Variety

Hello fellow cartoon lovers!

I'm coming to you with a question.  So far, we've kept the Saturday Morning re-creations "authentic", meaning that we've tried our best to include only content which could have actually aired on a Saturday morning on one of the Big Three networks.  We eventually want to expand beyond the Big Three and maybe even to cartoons which *gasp* might not have aired on Saturday mornings.  There's lots of great cartoons out there which were syndicated (and your non-ABC/CBS/NBC local networks decided when to air them) and ones which were aired on weekday mornings or weekdays after school, or on Sunday mornings.

For the sake of variety (and availability, since we can't get good copies of everything we'd like to use), how would you feel about eventually including some of the non-Saturday morning Big Three shows?  For example, this could include Rainbow Brite, He-Man, Bravestarr, and so many others that would otherwise be out of the question for an authentic Big Three Saturday Morning.

Discuss!

Hell to the yes!

Def here for Masters of the Universe/He-Man/She-Ra...
GI Joe, Transformers, Voltron, Tranzor-Z, THUNDERCATS!

REALLY oldskool stuff could be amusing too. Beetle Bailey, Popeye, the kind of stuff that aired when you got up waayyyy too early Sunday. I hesitate to include Davey and Goliath because it wasn't -cartoon- animation, and not everyone will be receptive to its Christianity-preaching, but it's certainly a nostalgia trip either way.

I would totally be up for that. Maybe for fun we could do an afterschool variant of the usual Saturday morning event? ;)

I wouldn't mind seeing other shows. The Real Ghostbusters, He-Man, Transformers, Rainbow Bright, GI Joe. Some of the shows I would watch in the morning before going to school.

There were a lot of cartoons growing up, good cartoons. It would be awesome to see more of them!

God knows I was up early on *many* days watching the interesting offerings (I had to travel to school) before I had to leave the house for the day. I wouldn't mind seeing them again. And as everyone else has said, the weekday afternoon shows were pretty cool, too. Why deny ourselves the pleasure?

I personally would prefer. The variety, but could understand the desire for authenticity. Maybe you could do a mix, make certain events the authentic Saturday only fare, and do some themed variety events which would include other, additional shows? That would be awesome, in my book. The more retro love, the better!

I am all in. Bring me He-Man.

Absolutely! I would love themed blocs.....all fantasy, or movie tie-in, or superheroes etc.

I have no problems with the variety bit. Plus don't forget shows that were not Saturday morning shows in the US may well have been Saturday morning shows in other countries, so this means you'd be more inclusive!

By the way, is there a US/UK equivalent for the following German website, listing actual TV programme for the main channels by date in the 1980s/90s?

Galaxy Rangers! I wide range of annoying cute androids and ewok-knock-offs, to interesting adult (in the 80's sanitized sense of the word) relations, intrigues and double dealings.

And the most ridiculous land transportation for law enforcers--but everything is cooler with horses, ain't it?

Early Monday morning, my thought is that we try to stick with authenticity, with the option to swap in syndicated programming (year appropriate) when The Real Thing can't be obtained or is in terrible quality.

Also had a thought, not a make-or-break thing, BUT: If we could keep the entire watch-along centered on one season/year (86/87, for example), I could prepare a "In The News" post for the Thursday or Friday night before the watch-along with some background information to lend detail to the event. "It's 1988! Margaret Thatcher has just been re-appointed for an unheard of third term as Prime Minister of England! The Iran Contra Hearings and Colonel Oliver North are on every channel denying that anybody knew we were selling weapons! Commercials for the movie "Moonstruck" (starring Cher) flood the airwaves, and the TV show "Thirtysomething" comes along to invent and define the new television category of "Hour Long Dramedy".

It would be longer than that, but you get the idea ;)

Saaaaaaaay now... I kind of like that idea! a nice little mid-week 2-hour block of syndicated half-hour toy commercials! I'll put that on a back burner :)

That site you linked to is *kind of* what I'm trying to do with this community, since I haven't seen a website that does a good chronological review/discussion of actual Saturday Morning schedules. What I'm using for my reference is good ol' Wikipedia... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980%E2%80%931981_United_States_network_television_schedule_(Saturday_morning)

ROBOT HORSES!!! IN SPACE!!!

I always *wanted* to be in to this show... I tried SO HARD! But I think it was just on too early in the morning for my little brain to wrap around it :(

Sounds great! You want to try swapping in some syndicated shows in to the existing 1986 watch-along as well, or shall we do this one step at a time?
