Indeed. There was even a fun "Goofus/Gallant" comparison strip with the Eggplant Wizard and another Kid Icarus villain, Uranos, respectively. (I had to break out the instruction manual to find out who he was.)
Since my NES skills are now more decent, I suppose I could be more critical of game accuracy. Yet, back then, we didn't have the famous game guides or the interweb to rely on. So, yeah, though, I don't begrudge anyone saying, "did anyone at least play the damn games before writing on them?"
I'm kinda amazed they got to use Mega Man or Simon Belmont, due all the copyright issues. (Of course, the comic couldn't and Season 2 revised quite a bit.) I'm not sure if that would have worked today, due to more awareness with copyrights.
Cracktastic is a good way to put it. Oddly enough, Nintendo Power did post a story involving a Captain Nintendo type character when the book started in 88. (He even fought Mother Brain.) I am not sure if that directly inspired Kevin, but it's an interesting concidence.
